Drug Class and Mechanism

Amoxil is susceptible to beta-lactamase and falls under its influence, so the spectrum of activity of amoxicillin do not include organisms that synthesize the enzyme. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactam structure similar to penicillin. In addition, it is able to inactivate the beta-lactamase enzymes, which are part of microorganisms resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins. Clavulanic acid is active on important from a clinical point of view of plasmid beta-lactamases, which are often responsible for the emergence of cross-resistance to antibiotics. The presence of clavulanic acid in the Amoxil, to protect amoxicillin from collapse under the action of the enzymes beta-lactamase and expands spectrum of antibacterial activity of amoxicillin, including those organisms that are generally resistant to amoxicillin and other penicillins and cephalosporins. Thus, Amoxil has the properties of broad-spectrum antibiotic and inhibitor of beta-lactamase
